What can you see in Marbach's literature museums?
Aesthetic processes of production and experience and their historical and linguistic conditions lie at the heart of the exhibitions of the German Literature Archive. Literature is not a phenomenon that is restricted to the book or to a single perspective. In fact, it is a living phenomenon precisely, because it allows many perspectives and can appear in all kinds of different media.
So visitors to the exhibitions will find themselves getting to grips with all kinds of things - texts, manuscripts, letters, photos, films, sound recordings, everyday objects and works of art from the archive, but also objects - created especially for the exhibitions - by reading and writing themselves. This individual creative approach not only enables a new view of literary texts and their traces, but also helps scholars to research aesthetic processes more closely and so to understand them better.
Change of Media and Perspective as a Program
The exhibitions are directed at individual authors and their texts, but also at material phenomenon of literature as well as historic-political questions. In the next years there is a particular emphasis on the various performative media and literature (such as song, game, film, computer languages) and also on cooperative formats, in which the Marbach archive stocks are put into global relationship and are viewed at from more than one perspective. Digital media play an important role here because, for example, they allow poetic texts to be read in different and polyperspectival ways. Moreover, they also enable us to experience the objects of an archive more physically, more intimately, and to develop research and exhibition projects in virtual formats in concert with partners from all over the world, thereby also expanding the real Marbach exhibition space through global social spaces.
