Bibliographic Collections
Bibliographic collections are often an undervalued cultural historical and philological source. Their holdings are composed of items of very diverse materiality and provenance. There are three aggregates that we currently maintain:
Along with the practical purpose fulfilled by dust jackets, they provide information about a work and its author and serve as its advertisement. Through a succinct aesthetic design, they create a recognizable image for a publisher or artist.
Publishers’ catalogues and thematic brochures provide information about the historical development of a publisher and are important sources—sometimes the only sources—for the programs and profiles of a publisher, press commentaries, prices and circulation figures. In the literary scene they play a key role between the book trade and readers.
The holdings of catalogues of antiquarian books, auctions and autographs are not only notable for their size and their denseness. These catalogues represent important sources, often well founded in scholarship, for the reconstruction of the sales and travels of whole private libraries, valuable presentation copies or manuscripts.
