Purposes and legal bases of data processing on this website
The purposes of data processing may vary depending on the area accessed or the function used on this website and are described in detail below.
The legal bases for data processing differ according to their purpose:
- If we process your data on the basis of your consent (e.g. because you agree to receive our newsletter), the legal basis is Art. 6 (1) (a) GDPR.
- If we process your data in order to fulfill a contract with you (e.g. an order in our shop), the legal basis is Art. 6 (1) (b) GDPR.
- If we process your data because we have a legitimate interest in doing so (e.g. to maintain the secure operation of the site and ward off hacker attacks, or to be able to perform a statistical evaluation of visits to our sites), the legal basis is Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR.
Recipients of the data
Within the scope of our data processing activities, only those who are essential for the respective processing are designated recipients of your data. As a rule, these are relevant internal departments. External parties, such as the service provider who supports us in sending out newsletters, may also be recipients of your data.
Other parties, such as advertisers, do not receive any personal data from us.
Please note that when you access our social media content, the operators of the respective social media platform receive data about you. The data protection regulations of the respective operator apply.
Certain functions of our website involve providers based in countries outside the EU (so-called third countries). Please note that data protection in third countries is not guaranteed in the same way as in the EU. You can find more information on this in the “Processing situations” section below in this statement.
Storage period
We only store your data for as long as we need it. In certain cases, we are legally obliged to continue storing data even after this period, e.g. due to retention periods imposed by the tax authorities.
Your rights
In accordance with Articles 15 to 22 of the GDPR, you have extensive rights in relation to the data concerning you. These include the right to information, correction, deletion or restriction of processing, data portability, and objection to processing. You can revoke your consent(s) at any time for the future; this does not affect the processing of your data prior to revocation. You also have the right to contact a supervisory authority if you have reason to complain about our data processing.
Provision of your data
In certain cases, the provision of your data is necessary for the conclusion of a contract (e.g. an order) or for processing your request (e.g. a contact request). In such cases, you are obliged to provide your data, as we will otherwise be unable to process your request.
In order to access our website and use certain functions, it is technically necessary to process certain data. This is described below.
Change of purpose
Should we ever wish to process your data for a purpose other than the original purpose, we will inform you of the change of purpose before further processing.
Processing situations
Log files
The DLA automatically collects and stores information that your browser transmits to us in the server log files. This includes:
- browser type and version,
- the operation system used,
- the referrer URL (previously visited page),
- the host name of the accessing computer (IP adress) and
- the date and time of the server request.
We cannot assign this data to specific individuals. It is not combined with other data sources. The data is deleted after statistical analysis.
These types of data are technically necessary to display the pages you visit correctly. In addition, they can be used if necessary to maintain the secure operation of this website (e.g. to defend against hacking attempts). The referrer URL is used in anonymized form for statistical purposes.
Web analytics (e.g. Google Analytics) are not used on this website.
Cookies
Our website only uses cookies that are strictly necessary, without which some content and functions of the website could not be displayed or used. This applies in particular to the shopping cart in our shop, without which you would not be able to place online orders.
As these technically necessary cookies fall under the exemption provision in Section 25 (2) TDDDG, you do not need to consent to the use of these cookies.
Form data
In order to process inquiries via the contact form, orders in the shop, or newsletter subscriptions (see also next section), the data you enter in the respective areas of the website is stored by the DLA. This data is used only for processing the respective request.
Newsletter
When you sign up to receive our newsletter, your IP address will also be processed along with your email address. This processing is carried out for statistical purposes and separately from the actual subscription management. Neither we nor our service provider combine IP addresses with other personal data. We cannot draw any conclusions about your person based on your IP address.
Protected areas
Individual areas of this website can only be accessed by entering valid login details (user name and password). These include the press area and subpages for specific projects. The data entered there is also only stored in the log files as described above.
Museum apps
On this website, you will find links to download the apps »literaturlesen« and »literaturbewegen« from the Apple and Google Play stores. Please note that when visiting the stores, their data protection policies apply.
Social Media
Please note that when visiting the linked pages, the respective data protection policies of the accessed page apply.
Additional functions
Certain functions on our website originate from providers based outside the EU. When you use these functions, server calls are triggered at the providers; as a rule, your IP address is transmitted and, if applicable, other data (similar to the list in the »Log files« section above).
This is the case, for example, when you use the route planner offered under »Directions«. Before you are redirected to the map provider's website and your data is transferred there, a message appears that you can confirm. Without this confirmation—i.e. without your permission—no data will be transferred.
When you play videos, for example, in the temporary exhibitions in the »Museums« section under »Museum of Modern Literature«, playing the videos triggers a server call to YouTube because we have uploaded our videos there.
Only if you click on »Watch on youtube.com« in the video will you be redirected directly to YouTube. Before the page is actually loaded, information about cookies and data processing by YouTube will appear; you can confirm your consent or rejection at the bottom of the information. If you are already logged in to YouTube with your own account at the time of the request, this information will not appear.

If you have any further questions or would like more detailed information on any point, please contact our data protection officer at dsb@dla-marbach.de. You can also access our data protection information sheet to the right of this data protection statement.
