Open Science

At the heart of the DLA’s work in acquisition, archiving, cataloguing, and research is the principle of making collections accessible to the widest possible scholarly community, both now and in the future.

The DLA is therefore committed to the conventions of Open Science, and is consequently dedicated to a culture of Open Data and bound to the FAIR principles for research data.

For example, Open Data and data interfaces are easily accessible through the DLA’s catalogue, Kallías, as well as in AMIE, the GND (Integrated Authority File), Wikidata, and nationwide databases.

The DLA sees data curation as its long-term goal. With its high-quality qualitative data – supported by the concentration of unique holdings, depth of cataloguing, media diversity, and high level of cross-referencing – it supports explorative catalogue searches, as well as ongoing use of data across open interfaces. The metadata are freely available in analogue form with a CC-BY licence.

The DLA is active in various committees and networks concerned with advancing Open Data, such as the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI), Science Data Centre for Literature (SDC4Lit), and the Marbach Weimar Wolfenbüttel Research Association. With the help of WikiLibrary Manifest, the DLA supports a reliable, machine-readable, and communally managed Linked Open Data Network for Art, Culture, and Science.

The DLA makes use of digital tools and methods to carry out collaborative research and crowdsourcing in all its departments – Manuscripts, Library, Images and Objects, and Museums – and to share its research findings with the public through (digital) publication platforms and the media, as well as in exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Literature and the Schiller National Museum.
