Restoration
Conservation maintains the original condition without direct alteration of the material. Restoration secures the original substance through physical and chemical interventions. In most cases, documents can be made accessible again by mending tears or imperfections on the paper, or by removing damaging materials that are not historically relevant, such as metal clips. The work on any manuscript bound by paper is overseen by the restoration workshop of the DLA. Such restorations usually regard individual pieces for use in the reading hall or in exhibitions.
Single pages are restored in response to specific needs. In addition to text montages and the creation of passe-partouts, mechanical restorative interventions of the material are also employed.
