Carole E. Chaski: Fakery, Forgery and Forensic Computational Linguistics
Documents are faked and forged for both criminal and civil cases. In the murder of Michael Hunter (1992), his roommate Joseph Mannino composed fake suicide notes, attempting to mislead the police and remove suspicion from himself. In the Yukos arbitration (2015), the tribunal signed their names to an award imposing a $54 billion penalty. But 75% of the award was not authored by the tribunal, who gave away their duty to the arbitration secretariat. Such situations demand the most reliable methods to identify forgeries. The development of reliable methods initiated forensic computational linguistics, in particular a toolkit called ALIAS: Automated Linguistic Identification & Assessment System. ALIAS has been used in historical and literary cases, such as the authorship of a historical letter, and the relationship between literary manuscripts and published novels. This paper will provide a demonstration of the application of ALIAS in forensic settings.
