Seminarreihe ›Kafkas Echo‹: Reverberations: Franz Kafka and Literary Modernism in Turkey

Eric Auerbach’s Mimesis, written in Istanbul, with a long discussion of twentieth century literary modernists, includes a brief mention of Kafka. This seminar will pose questions about why, in Istanbul in the 1940s, a longer exploration of Kafka's work might not have been possible. These discussions will be followed by readings of Kafka’s work in relation to legacies of World War I (drawing on the Ottoman context), the interwar years in Turkey, and the impact of Kafka’s work on post-1950s Turkish literature. Further, the seminar will focus on methodologies, possibilities and limits of studying Kafka in Turkey and transnationally. Drawing on recently uncovered archives, such as the Nachlass of the German Literature Professor Traugott Fuchs (1906-1997), who taught for roughly four decades in universities in Istanbul, the seminar will offer ways of illustrating entanglements between history, archive, fiction, and silence. Through new readings, interpretations of and allusions to Kafka, the seminar will proffer ways of interpreting European and Turkish modernism’s embeddedness in and response to legacies of violence.
