Seminarreihe ›Kafkas Echo‹: A »System des Teilbaus«: Pre-figuring Franz Kafka’s Posthumous Authorship

This talk will problematize the question of how to think about posthumous authorship by exploring the ways Franz Kafka’s stories implicitly prefigure his own case. Drawing on Walter Benjamin’s notion of an »historical index«, we can build on the idea that texts speak into (and about) a future of which they are necessarily ignorant at the point of composition. Since Kafka’s works evince such a strong awareness of posterity, as well as of the »afterlife« of a writer and their works, this talk makes the case that Kafka’s oeuvre in particular exemplifies the method of literature itself: that it retains an historical consciousness that speaks after death, shaping its author’s own posthumous authorship.
