Gisèle Sapiro receives Humboldt Research Award
Gisèle Sapiro, Professor for Sociology at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) in Paris and Director of Research at the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS), has received a Humboldt Research Award in recognition of her exceptional achievements in research and teaching. The 60,000-Euro-award is presented by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to international researchers who are nominated by German academics.
Gisèle Sapiro (born in 1965 in Neuilly-sur-Seine near Paris) is a highly decorated sociologist and a pioneer in the field of the sociology of literature, combining indepth historical studies with profoundly innovative methodological approaches. Sapiro wrote her doctoral dissertation on the literary scene in Vichy France under the supervision of Pierre Bourdieu. Working in his tradition, she has made ground-breaking contributions to questions surrounding the autonomy of literary and intellectual life, the connections between literature, law, and politics, and the social conditions underlying the international dissemination of literary and scholarly texts. Her texts have been translated into many languages and have received extensive interdisciplinary attention. Among her publications are The Routledge Handbook of the history and sociology of ideas (2023, ed. with S. Geroulanos), The Sociology of Literature (2023), and The French Writers’ War, 1940–1953 (2014); she is also editor of the journals ›Culture & Société‹ and ›Socio-Historical Studies of the Social and Human Sciences‹. Sapiro has been Visiting Professor at New York University, Berkeley, Freiburg, Tel Aviv, Mexico, Laval (Quebec), and Santiago de Compostela, among others. She has been a member of the Academia Europaea since 2015.
Gisèle Sapiro was nominated for the Humboldt Research Award by Sandra Richter, Director of the Deutsches Literaturarchiv Marbach. They have been working together on literary sociological questions (development of the literary market and the public sphere, the significance of literary translation for authorship and the literary work, the sociology of ideas) since 2022, and this work is visible in the research profile of the DLA Marbach and the Stuttgart Center for Text Studies. The Humboldt Research Award will enable Gisèle Sapiro to spend a research stay in Germany – in Berlin, Constance, Munich, Heidelberg, Saarbrücken, and Marbach, among other places – which she plans to begin in spring 2024. During this time, she will work on her current research project ›The Making of World Authorship‹.
