Seminarreihe ›Kafkas Echo‹: Locked Cupboards, Empty Towns, a Great Bazar: Reading Kafka’s ‘Nachlass’

The seminar discusses the (philological, poetic and political) conditions of reading Kafka’s literary estate, or ‘Nachlass’, while exploring one of his late literary testimonies – a minor booklet he used for the writing of fragments and literary notes during his stay in Steglitz, Berlin (1923-1924). The notes in Kafka’s booklet include descriptions of dreams and childhood scenes: it tells of learning assignments, homework – undone, of locked cupboards and coffins, of soldiers, useless assistants and fools, of hometowns – turning empty and ghostly, of winter journeys, attempts of escape and desperate efforts of homecoming. Although this seminar does not attempt to offer any reading-plan to bring together these figures, motives, and themes of Kafka’s fragments into an integrative scheme of interpretation, it nevertheless aims to interrogate possible orientations in Kafka’s booklet and asks whether these may serve as a sign of/for a new readership.
