Seminarreihe ›Kafkas Echo‹: Kafka at the Ballet: The Imperial Russian Ballet, the Ballets Russes, and Contemporary Adaptation

In one of the first entries of what remains of Kafka’s diaries, we find a description of his dreams about the dancer Eugenia Eduardova. It opens up both historical questions about what Kafka saw on the dance stage and aesthetic questions about his choreographic poetics. This talk discusses the ballets that Kafka watched – both of the Russian Imperial Ballet and the Ballet Russes – and addresses some of the confusion that has slipped into Kafka scholarship. This research is extended to contemporary dance adaptations of Kafka’s work as shedding new light on Kafka’s choreographic imagination.
